Story #2
I would like to nominate my son, Brent Johnson, as a person who brings comfort to others. Brent is a college junior majoring in Chemistry; he finds time each week to volunteer at a local Children's Shelter. Brent spends approximately 10 hours each week collecting donations, helping with fund raising events, and even cooking for the children. Brent is a good friend to many of the children who are frightened and needing comfort. The children have been removed from their homes for their own safety; often they are confused and need comfort from someone who cares. Brent is the someone who cares for these children.
Story #3
My Mom has brought "comfort" to international proportions. She and my Dad have hosted exchange students, every year for the past ten years. Mom welcomes my new "sister or brother" into our home by giving them a big hug. She "comforts" them through their initial bout of "home sickness." She guides them through the "American" high school system and helps them with their homework. When they leave to go back to their country, I then need to comfort Mom who cries because she doesn't know when she will see them again. She is a good role model to me in demonstrating the gift of hospitality. Her "comfort" has reached the far ends of the globe!
Story #4
My sister placed her comfort secondary to that of my children. She moved into a small house next to mine. I am a single mother who was struggling trying to pay for child care. Then my sister Jackie visited one day and said "I am moving next door, the kids will be able to come here after school and I can tuck them into bed and stay with them until you get home from work". She made them more comfortable by being able to be here at their home versus being at different places everyday. She provided them stability, love and nurturing when I was working. I cant thank her enough for providing that home comfort atmosphere and love to my children so that I can provide for the
Story #5
When my mother was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer almost 2 years ago, it was difficult on our family. My dad is the hero, though, as he always has been. He gave up a great job including a well-deserved promotion so that he could be available to help Mom as she recovered from surgery and went through chemo. My parents have been sleeping on the same bed & mattress for the past 34 years, which is especially difficult on Mom now with all of her health issues and the stress that Dad has on him. They deserve to have comfortable sleep that Spring Air would provide, and I would love to tell them that they could have it. Thank you!
Story #6
My wife, Deborah comforts practically the entire neighborhood. If a neighbor has an illness, shes there with soup or a casserole to help them feel better. One neighbor had double knee replacement and Deborah cooked several meals for her. Another neighbor had a premature baby by c-section and Deborah cooked a baked ziti casserole, salad and Texas toast for their family of five. Whenever anyone is in need, shes ALWAYS there lending a hand. From mowing grass, edging, cooking, lending a shoulder to cry on and baby-sitting shes their saving grace. Not only does she do for the neighbors, but exemplifies the role of wife and mother in our home. Everyone loves her!
Story #7
This story is about my mom, Marie Gardner. She is 83 years old. She has taken care of family members and their children for as long as I can remember. Struggling as single parents, she offered day care services for little or no charge to my cousin and me when we couldn't afford it elsewhere. She would also watch my children after school. As mine grew and my sister had two girls, my mom offered her time for them also. My mom has given of herself unselfishly. Never asking for money, we would still repay her with a night out for dinner or a new blouse she had her eye on.Our children are all grown now but we all know we can still count on her for anything.
Story #8
Amy LaValley is an instructor of therapeutic riding lessons at Adirondack Stables in West Chazy, NY. Her work with the handicapped is amazing. She gives disabled kids a sense of independence with her instruction and riding lessons. I wish there were more people like her to help disabled people gain confidence and pride through riding horses. The stable has an excellent program and deserves to be comended.
Story #9
I'd like to nominate my husband, Gary Ickes, for a Spring Air Comfort Connection award. He is a pharmacist who is probably one of the most caring, unselfish people I've ever met. He consistently gets calls at night, holidays, weekends to fill a prescription and does so without complaint. He goes out of his way to help his customers. He's picked up groceries, shovelled snow, raked leaves, etc. An older lady in our community needed medicine. Her house was on a hill & could not be reached even by 4 wheel drive due to a bad snow storm. Gary strapped on his cross country skis and delivered her pills! He helps ailing people live more comfortably every single day.
Story #10
My beautiful sister Erin has brought so much comfort and compassion to my life. Without her, I would not have made it thru this dark period in my life when I needed to be my strongest. I have 15 month old twins, one of them has a rare cancer called Hepatoblastoma, he has had months of grueling chemotherapy, many surgeries and just recently received a full liver transplant. My sister took in my son Aiden when Brandon received his transplant call, drove 300 miles and brought him to her home with love. Though I missed him dearly, I never had to worry about him so I could focus on Brandons recovery in Houston. She has been my rock and I love her so!
Story #11
I would like to nominate my friend, Jana Hickey, for the comfort award. Jana was a single mother of two with an 8th grade education who got her GED and put herself through nursing school. After practicing nursing for 19 or 20 years, one of her daughters was diagnosed with a kind of autonomic dysfunction disorder which has a bleak prognosis. After much testing at the Mayo Clinic, Jana was told that therapeutic massage could be beneficial to her daughters well-being. So she put herself through massage therapy school, switched careers from nursing to medical massage therapy and has helped not only her daughter, but many other people with physical problems.
Story #12
The person I am nominating for the Spring Air Comfort Connection Award is my Aunt Lynda. She started her own non-profit years ago and is still going strong today. She is a hardworking woman who believes in helping others. There are many underprivileged families in her county that sleep on floors, live in garages and live with multiple families just to try and survive. My aunt has gotten couches, beds and matresses, blankets, pillows, etc. for these kids and families. She also believes in education, she started a tutoring program for foster and underprivleged kids, she believes it starts and ends with education. Thank you for letting me tell you about mu special Aunt!
Story #13
May wife is a nurse and she never ceases to amaze me with her compassion. She has worked in ICU with critical patients, worked in an outpatient oncology department, performed relief work at an inpatient hospice and also been a hospice volunteer. Even in our neighborhood if someone is ill or a family member is dying they will call her and no matter the time of day or night she will go. She brought her father to Macon. He suffered from Alzheimers and multiple medical conditions. She cared for him with a smile even with his extreme mood fluctuations. Her mother is now in Macon under her care. It never ends for her!
Story #14
My mother in law, Linda, was remarried on January 3, 2004. A week later, her 94 year old father became ill, so she left her husband of 1 week, and moved 100 miles away to live with her father and care for him. He had taken care of Linda's mom in the last years of her life and refused to put her in a nursing home, so Linda made sure that he had the best care possible. For 3 years, she sacrificed her own plans to take care of her father, and was able to care for him at home up until the last 2 weeks of his life. He past away in November, 2006, just days after his 96th birthday. Her sacrifice and love for her father was definitely an inspiration to me.
Story #15
I want to nominate my mom, Pat Ward. She is always giving to other people - rarely thinking about (or taking care of) herself. Last year she invited my cousin and her three kids to live with her while the cousin's husband was in Iraq for nine months. She flew to Pennsylvania and drove them to Washington. It was all about the kids! In the midst of that "adventure," my grandpa died. She now helps take care of my grandma. She also works full-time and is active at church. Add to that a broken hand (in November), a diagnosis of bladder cancer (in January), and now a bulging disk and arthritis in her back (in June). And she NEEDS a new bed! Thank you.
Story #16
My mother’s friend Betty is in her 80’s with a long history of health issues culminating in a diagnosis of advanced cancer. She had been living in a guest house (that sounds deceptively charming) where she was basically left to her own devices by her daughter in the main house. It was not unusual for my mom to visit and find Betty sitting in filth with matted hair and decaying food and trash filling the small space. Finally, after unsuccessfully addressing the situation with Betty’s daughter, my mother moved Betty into my parents’ home. She set up a used hospital bed, arranged for hospice, and after 6 months helped Betty move into a facility. My amazing mom, Kit
Story #17
Brock Buckner is a fourteen year old high-school student who often thinks of others first. Just this past week, he has traveled twenty miles each day to help community members in Grand Tower, Illinois. He has painted fences, cleaned gutters, raked leaves, cleaned basements, and hauled off trash to make others' lives less stressful and more comfortable. When peoples' needs are met, they are more likely to feel happy, satisfied, and comfortable. Brock Buckner has helped pave the way for many community members in Grand Tower, Illinois, to feel happy, satisfied, and comfortable.
